Tenant Participation

Being a tenant of the Co-operative gives you a number of rights and at the same time it places a number of responsibilities on you and your family and those that visit your home.

These rights and responsibilities are for your benefit to make sure that you are able to enjoy your home.

Do Don´t

Take responsibility for your rent.

Expect some noise from other flats.

Keep an eye on children and do not allow them to be a nuisance to neighbours.

Keep close doors closed at all times.

Keep pets under control.

Maintain your garden.

Put rubbish in bins provided.

Report repairs as they are required.

Leave rubbish lying around.

Let anyone into the close or your home if you do not know who they are.

Play loud music, especially late at night.

Make alterations to your home without prior approval.

Use your house for illegal or immoral purposes.

Nuisance Neighbours
What if you have a problem with your neighbour? Problems with neighbours can vary from noisy parties, problems with children to more serious criminal activity.

The Co-operative wants to you to enjoy your home, so if you are experiencing problems with your neighbours why not try the following steps.

  • Discuss the matter with your neighbour, they may not realise they are causing a problem. Remember to approach your neighbour in a calm and open way and be willing to compromise if possible.
  • If the situation does not improve or you are worried about approaching your neighbour, speak to your Housing Officer. They will discuss the problem with you and will deal with your complaint in confidence.
  • The Housing Officer will visit everybody involved and try to settle the situation. If mediation does not resolve the problem we may consider court action against the tenants concerned.

Court action is normally a last resort and can be difficult and costly. It is helpful if tenants affected keep a note and diary of the dates and times they have problems, this diary can be used as evidence in court.

For criminal activity you should always call the Police, particularly if you are being threatened or if your neighbours are involved in using their homes for illegal or immoral purposes.

The Co-operative will request copies of Police reports to allow us to take action against such cases and have been successful in the past in obtaining eviction decrees for those involved in criminal activity, particularly drug dealing.

Common Areas
Tenants of a tenemental property are legally obliged to ensure that the common stairs and close area are kept clean and washed at least once per week. This includes the cleaning of close and door entry windows.

Tenants are requested to keep bin store areas tidy and to arrange the cleaning of their own wheelie bins. You should not leave unwanted household items such as cookers or wardrobes in the backcourt. Rather contact the cleansing department who will uplift and dispose of these free of charge. Cleansing can be contacted on 0141 287 9700.
